The Aalto vase was designed by Alvar Aalto in 1936, who won the competition held by the Iittala glassworks to produce objects to take to the World Exhibition in Paris. There is an air of mystery surrounding this vase as to the source of inspiration for its highly original shape: fjord, lake, amoeba, tree trunk, it is not known exactly what inspired Aalto to design this famous vase, but it must have been a shape coming from nature. Aalto himself never revealed where the inspiration for this vase came from but simply called it ironically the Eskimo woman's leather trousers. This organically shaped vase has become the very symbol of Finland. Produced, still today as it was from the beginning, with three layers of glass blown by mouth on wooden molds, today it is part of the permanent collection of many museums around the world including the MOMA in New York.
