The 4 Illy Art Collection espresso cups are part of the new collection designed by Ai Weiwei for Illy, a collection that evokes the famous 2006 Colored Vases vases by the same designer: ancient Neolithic vases that the artist dips in cans of industrial paint completely changing their design and functionality. Like the Colored Vases, the Ai Weiwei cups are overturned and transformed into real contemporary works of art. Very charming and elegant, Ai Weiwei cups are conceived in a process of appropriation and destruction. With this transformation process from an artifact of the past to a work of contemporary art, Ai Weiwei alludes to the systematic destruction of history and culture carried out in China at the time of Mao up to state capitalism today. With this in collaboration with Illy therefore Ai Weiwei wants to create a watershed, a change, a kind of design reform.  What are you waiting for?
