Lalique Le Bouchon d'épouvante, René Magritte and Lalique Crystal Sculpture, 2023
The sculpture Le Bouchon d'épouvante was born from the collaboration between René Magritte and Lalique in 2023, made of clear crystal. This sculpture depicts one of the recurring themes in Magritte's works: the unexpected and the mysterious. In a letter dated May 21, 1966, Magritte provided Marcel Mabille with instructions to create this object. The oil painting of the image was nearly completed. In this letter, Magritte suggests enriching Mabille's collection with a peculiar object, a bowler hat adorned with a label reminiscent of those on ancient pharmacy jars, featuring block-lettered black text on golden paper with a black border. The object in question would be called "l'orrendo tappo" (the horrendous stopper). Subsequently, Mabille signed three labels that were used to realize the artwork. The crystal sculpture is both a tribute and a reinterpretation, bridging two artistic eras. Perfect as a gift idea for all lovers of design and art, or to be used as a decorative item for your office, bedroom, or living room, the crystal sculpture Le Bouchon d'épouvante is intended to inspire and provoke fascination.
